As political realignments gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, the conversation around who best represents the interests of Ekiti North Senatorial District has once again come to the fore. Among the leading voices in this discourse is Senator Ayo Arise, whose track record, leadership depth, and enduring connection with the grassroots and political juggernauts continue to position him as a compelling choice for the Senate. Ekiti North, comprising five local government areas—Oye, Ikole, Ido-Osi, Ilejemeje, and Moba—has witnessed a rotational pattern of representation since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999.
However, a closer examination of history reveals a clear imbalance that must be addressed in the interest of fairness and equity. Ido-Osi Local Government has dominated the senatorial seat for 12 years of representation through: Senator Olubunmi Adetunbi( 2011- 2015 and 2019- 2023) , senator Cyril Fasuyi ( 2023 – 2027). Moba local government had senator Olatunji Ajayi (1999-2003; he passed out while Senator James Kolawole stepped to complete his second term (2003-2007) while senator Duro Faseyi from Ilejemeje served between 2015- 2019). Each of these individuals contributed in their own ways, the prolonged occupancy by Ido- Osi local government raises legitimate questions about balance and inclusiveness in representation.
If this imbalance persist in favour of Ido-Osi in 2027,despite non performance and poor representation , it will not only be a political suicide but total collapse of the system.
In contrast, Oye Local Government, which produced Ayo Arise in the sixth senate between 2007-2011, has only had a brief four-year stint in the Senate. Despite this limited opportunity, Arise’s impact during his tenure remains widely acknowledged. His approach to leadership was defined by accessibility, strategic thinking, and a genuine commitment to the welfare of his constituents.
It is therefore perplexing that Senator Arise’s renewed aspiration is being met with resistance from a particular quarter; seeking a return to the Senate, particularly after such a short initial tenure compared to others, should not be treated as an overreach or provoke unnecessary attacks. Rather, it should be seen as a legitimate continuation of service by a leader with proven capacity. Indeed, if there is any local government with a stronger basis to agitate for the senatorial seat on grounds of equity, it should be Ikole Local Government, which, since 1999, has not produced a senator. This reality underscores the need for measured, fact-based conversations rather than politically motivated opposition.
Beyond zoning considerations, the case for Senator Ayo Arise rests firmly on his personal attributes and political pedigree. A seasoned politician with deep exposure in national affairs, Arise’s wealth of experience is increasingly critical in today’s complex legislative environment. His understanding of governance, policy articulation, and stakeholder engagement sets him apart as a leader capable of delivering tangible results.
His leadership prowess is further reflected in his strong connection with the grassroots. Arise has consistently demonstrated a rare blend of humility, accessibility, and responsiveness—qualities that resonate deeply with ordinary citizens. His community engagement efforts, both during and after his time in office, have reinforced his reputation as a people-centered leader.
Equally important to note is his wisdom and maturity in handling political issues. In a landscape often marked by tension and division, Arise has remained a voice of reason, advocating dialogue, inclusiveness, and sustainable development. His love for the masses is not merely rhetorical; it is evident in his actions and long-standing relationships across communities. In contrast, the performance of the current occupant, has come under scrutiny from various stakeholders who argue that the benefits accrued to him politically have not translated into commensurate development for the district. Many believe that the region deserves more impactful representation, particularly in terms of visible projects, legislative influence, and effective advocacy that will further enhance development in Ekiti state.
As such, calls for the incumbent to step aside are not borne out of sentiment but from a growing desire for more effective leadership. After years in office, it is only reasonable to assess performance against expectations—and where gaps exist, to make room for leaders better equipped to deliver.
In the final analysis, the 2027 senatorial race in Ekiti North presents an opportunity to recalibrate representation in line with fairness, competence, and the collective interest of the people. Ayo Arise embodies these ideals. His experience, grassroots appeal, and unwavering commitment to service make him not just a viable candidate, but a necessary one for the progress of Ekiti North.
