94 princes and one princess—from the Fusengbuwa ruling house have emerged for the vacant Awujale stool of Ijebu land.
The aspirants were nominated on Monday at a family meeting held at Bisrod Hall, GRA, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State. The exercise was presided over by the Chairman of the ruling house, Otunba Abdulateef Owoyemi, alongside his deputy, Prince Adedokun Ajidagba, and Vice Chairman, Prof. Fassy Yusuf, with officials of the Ijebu Ode Local Government in attendance as observers.
Prominent nominees include Giwa Abiodun Onanuga, husband of former Ogun State Deputy Governor, Mrs Yetunde Onanuga; Dr Kunle Hassan, an ophthalmologist and founder of Eyes Foundation Hospital; and Otunba Fatai Arowolo of Aron Construction. The only female contestant is Oluwakemi Onanuga, a lawyer.
Each contestant was represented by two relatives who moved and seconded their nominations, which were subsequently ratified by the family.
Speaking after the meeting, the family head, Owoyemi, commended members for a peaceful and orderly process, noting that traditional consultations, including guidance from the Ifa oracle, were undertaken to ensure a successful outcome.
He said the responsibility now lies with the kingmakers to select one of the nominees as the next Awujale, expressing optimism that a new monarch would emerge within the next month.
The Awujale stool became vacant in July 2025 following the death of Oba Sikiru Adetona, who reigned for 65 years and passed on at the age of 91.
