The Ekiti State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has congratulated journalists in the State on this year’s World Press Freedom Day.
In a statement co-signed by the Chairman of the Council, Comrade Kayode Babatuyi and the Secretary, Comrade O’Seun Ogunsakin, the Union said the theme of this year’s Press Freedom Day “Freedom of Expression in the face of the AI revolution” is apt and timely as there have been serious questions on the use of artificial intelligence in virtually all spheres of human endeavour.
The umbrella body for journalists in Ekiti State called on its members to adapt to technological advancements that enhance professionalism.
The Union admitted that Artificial Intelligence has changed the face of journalism, but called for caution as it has given rise to misinformation and biases.
While felicitating Ekiti journalists on the Press Freedom Day, the NUJ said members should take advantage of the positive potential in Artificial Intelligence but must not forget the ethics of journalism which are the guideposts for all journalism.
“We felicitate our members in Ekiti State and colleagues across the world on this year’s World Press Freedom Day. This year’s theme is timely as people have called to question the use of Artificial Intelligence in the Media. We hereby urge our members to make positive use of the potential of AI, bearing in mind that the ethics of journalism must not be compromised. Once we lose the ethics, we lose the profession”, the Union noted.
