The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has intensified efforts to broaden its political base ahead of the 2027 general election, calling on former President Goodluck Jonathan, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and other prominent political figures to join the party.
The appeal followed the inauguration of the party’s North-East Zonal Congress Committee in Gombe State on January 11, an event the ADC said underscored its renewed drive to strengthen internal structures, promote internal democracy, and reposition the party for national leadership.
In a communiqué issued on Tuesday, ADC factional National Chairman, Nafiu Gombe, described the inauguration as a critical step towards consolidating the party’s presence in the North-East and ensuring transparent and credible congresses across the zone. The event was presided over by Dr Muhammad Muhammad.
Mrs Patience Alex was inaugurated as Chairperson of the North-East Zonal Congress Committee, while Mr Abayomi Adekunle was named Chairman of the Zonal Appeal Committee.
Gombe said the development reflected the party’s resolve to build a credible and inclusive platform capable of attracting Nigerians across political divides. He formally invited several serving governors and elder statesmen to join the ADC, including Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, as well as Saraki and Jonathan.
According to him, their experience and leadership are vital to the ADC’s mission of rebuilding and repositioning Nigeria.
The party reiterated its commitment to good governance, national unity, and sustainable development, adding that it would continue mobilising support nationwide for a new political direction anchored on accountability and equity.
The move comes amid growing political realignments ahead of 2027, following the recent defection of the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to the David Mark-led ADC.
