Nine senators from three political parties have formally notified the Senate of their defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signaling a fresh wave of political realignment in the National Assembly.
Those who moved from the Labour Party to ADC are Victor Umeh, Tony Nwoye and Ireti Kingibe and five others—Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Binos Yaroe, Lawal Adamu Usman, Mohammed Ogoshi Onawo and Augustine Akobundu—resigned their membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (Nigeria) before joining the ADC.
Also joining the party is Enyinnaya Abaribe, who had been the sole senator elected on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
However, the Senate asked Abaribe to reconsider his decision within one week, noting that his explanation that he left APGA after being sacked by the party was not sufficient under constitutional provisions guiding defections.
The defections were formally communicated during plenary, further altering the party composition in the upper legislative chamber.
