The Wife of the Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji, has reaffirmed her husband’s administration’s resolve to combat sexual harassment in tertiary institutions across the state, declaring that offenders must be held accountable to safeguard students and preserve the integrity of higher education.
Dr. Oyebanji made the commitment while receiving the management of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joshua Ogunwole, at her office in Ado-Ekiti.
The First Lady stressed that sexual harassment should never be treated with levity, warning that failure to sanction perpetrators only emboldens others to commit similar offences.
She commended the university’s current leadership for the deliberate steps taken to curb incidents of sexual harassment and foster a safer academic environment.
As part of efforts to strengthen advocacy against gender-based violence, she disclosed plans to organise a statewide gender summit and embark on advocacy visits to tertiary institutions.
According to her, the initiative will educate students, lecturers and other stakeholders on moral values, gender rights and the legal implications of sexual harassment and related offences.
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joshua Ogunwole, applauded the Governor’s wife for her impactful interventions in women and child development, describing the Biodun Oyebanji administration as one that has provided purposeful and quality leadership for the state.
He noted that the prevailing peace and stability in Ekiti had created a conducive environment for growth and development, as he said the achievements of the administration deserved commendation.
Professor Ogunwole also praised Dr. Oyebanji’s Widows, Aged and Orphans Hope (WAOH) Foundation, noting that its interventions have restored hope to vulnerable women and girls through protection, improved welfare and sustained support for girl-child education.
The Vice-Chancellor further announced that FUOYE’s 11th Convocation Ceremony will be held in February, 2027 and revealed that the University’s Senate has approved Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji as the Convocation Lecturer, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to humanitarian service, women’s empowerment, and social development.
