The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ekiti State Council, has commended Governor Abiodun Oyebanji for his reconciliatory initiatives towards contestants in the June 2026 governorship election, describing the development as a positive step towards unity and accelerated development of the state.
The Union made the commendation in a communiqué issued at the end of its August Congress held at the Tai Oguntayo Hall, NUJ Press Centre, Ado-Ekiti.
The Congress, presided over by the State Council Chairman, Comrade Kayode Babatuyi, noted that the decision by some opposition candidates and their supporters to support the newly elected governor demonstrated a commitment to the collective interest of Ekiti State beyond partisan considerations.
The journalists urged political leaders and other stakeholders to sustain the spirit of reconciliation, cooperation and inclusiveness in order to promote peace and stability in the state.
The Congress also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the reconstruction of some federal roads across Ekiti State, noting that the intervention would improve transportation, commerce and the general well-being of residents.
However, the NUJ called on the Federal Government to prevail on contractors handling the road projects to accelerate the pace of work and ensure their timely completion. It said the deplorable condition of some of the roads had continued to cause hardship to commuters and residents, making urgent completion of the projects imperative.
The Congress further called on both the Federal and Ekiti State Governments to urgently equip government-owned media organisations with modern and state-of-the-art equipment.
According to the Union, the provision of modern equipment would enable journalists and other media professionals to operate effectively and meet contemporary technological standards in the rapidly changing media environment.
The Ekiti NUJ also commended the leadership of the Union at the national level under its President, Alhaji Yahaya Alhassan, describing his administration as purposeful and result-oriented.
Congress noted that the national leadership had contributed significantly to the repositioning of the Union and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the administration in its efforts to take the NUJ to greater heights.
Meanwhile, the Congress congratulated two recently retired Directors of the Ekiti State Ministry of Information, Mr. David Olajide and Mr. Sunday Agunbiade, on their meritorious service to the state and the journalism profession.
The Union acknowledged their contributions to the development of the Ministry of Information and wished them fulfilling and rewarding years in retirement.
