The Executive Governor of Ekiti state, Mr Biodun Oyebanji has called on students of International Institute of Journalism to embrace innovations and equip themselves with the usage of technological advancement that have shapen journalism profession
The governor gave the charge at the matriculation of 2022/2023 academic session of the institution on 20th June, 2023 at Ado Ekiti.
The governor who was represented by his Special Assistant on Media, Yinka Oyebode tasked the students to display high level of professionalism in : thought, writing and presentation. Saying such feat could be achieved only when the students are diligent in their studies and ready to learn at all foral.
Yinka Oyebode reiterated the roles of journalists in the society to include Proffering solutions to problems and mirroring the society without any blemish. He however enjoined the management of the institution to be innovative by including online journalism and social media engagements into their curriculum.
Adding that the management should introduce journalism profession to secondary school students via career talk, saying that would help the students acquint themselves with the principles of journalism at their tender age.
The Registrar of the institution, Professor Afolabi who was represented by Akogun Tai Oguntayo urged the students to display high level of morals and professionalism in their journalistic pursuits, saying journalism profession requires huge responsibilities of courage, wisdom, discipline, accuracy and public interest .
He added that journalists played crucial role in democratic setting by providing accurate and reliable information for the masses to make informed decisions about happenings around them.
Earlier, the coordinator of the institution in Ado Ekiti, Pastor Dare Daniels in his welcome address admonished the students to be focused and determined to come out in flying colours from the institution. He however told them that challenges would come their way in the course of their studies but advised them not to be swayed away. According to him” Winners don’t quit and quitters don’t win”
The coordinator applauded the lecturers of the institution for impacting necessary teachings and tenets of journalism on the students.
On his part, the National President of Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade Chris Isiguzor represented by the Vice Chairman, Zone B, Comrade Ronke Samo encouraged the students to be diligent, saying the Certificate would position them well in the nearest future. Adding that they should not be discouraged by challenges.
Also, The NUJ Chairman, Ekiti state Council, Comrade Rotimi Ojomoyela commended the academic standard of IIJ nationwide, stressing the academic prowees of the lecturers who had impacted many graduands who occupied top positions in media industries in Nigeria and foreign countries.
Comrade Ojomoyela frowned at students who have not paid at least fifty percent of their tuition fees, stressing that defaulters would not be allowed to write examination.
He also frowned at the way graduates convocation are pilling up, the Chairman tasked his successor to ensure convocations are done for all graduates from inception of institution in Ekiti to date.
Akogun Tai Oguntayo administered oaths on the students .
Dignitaries at the matriculation includes: Academic Board members, GM of Fresh FM, Jide Ogunluyi, GM Broadcasting Service of Ekiti State represented by Bisi Oluwasona, Representative of Voice FM, NUJ Executives, journalists, families of matriculants.
