The Leadership of the Student Union Government of the Federal Polytechnic Ado Ekiti has appealed to EKiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji to declare state of emergency on flooded areas along Odo Ado and Poly Road Ado Ekiti with immediate effect saying that thousands of students and residents in the area continue to count their loses.
The SUG President, Mr Olubodun Abiodun Johnson (HARRY) who wrote an open letter to the Governor explained that recent heavy downpour had rendered the residents, many of whom were students of the institution homeless as well as losing their properties and credentials to incessant flooding.
According to him, the situation of the road, particularly the potholes at various points, including the one in front of Saint Paul’s Anglican Church, Odo Ado, Ado-Èkìtì had subjected passers by to untold hardship and hooked in gridlock causing motor crashes in which people sustain degrees of injuries and sometime lose of lives to accidents.
The letter reads:
The situation of this road poses a major risk to the safety of motorists and the commuters along this route. We are always hooked in long hours of gridlock, causing severe delays in the movement of vehicles making many of our students and staffs to find it extremely difficult to attend lectures and carry out their daily activities efficiently.
We therefore beg the responsive and responsible Government of Ekiti State, on behalf of the Students of the Federal Polytechnic Ado Ekiti to urgently and immediate intervene in these pressing issues that affects not only our students but also the residents of Erifun, Ureje, Emirin, Olókè méjì and Odò Ado communities amongst others.
We know it is a federal government road, but citizens of EKiti State are the ones plying this route and we are confident in the various effort of the government towards creating good environment for everyone, as well as making life livable for all.
The truth is that many of out students have lost their credentials to flooding and our future is really under threats.
We understand that the responsibility for maintaining and repairing federal government roads lies with the federal government. However, given the urgency of the situation and the significant disruptions it is causing to our educational pursuits, we kindly request that the state government intervene as a temporary measure to alleviate the immediate issues we are facing.
Our primary concern is the safety and well-being of our students and the entire community. By addressing this pressing matter, you would not only ensure our safety but also contribute to the continued pursuit of education and the overall well-being of the citizens in this area.
We kindly urge you to expedite the necessary repairs to rectify the pothole and improve the overall condition of the road as an interim solution until federal government intervention takes place. Your swift action on this issue would be greatly appreciated and would go a long way in helping our students go about their academic activities without further disruptions.
