The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticized the Federal Government’s plan to introduce fresh taxes on fuel and aviation from January 2026, warning that the measures will deepen economic hardship for Nigerians.
National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, told journalists in Abuja that the 5% fuel surcharge under the 2007 Federal Road Maintenance Law—now incorporated into the 2025 Tax Act—alongside new aviation levies, would further cripple businesses and make air travel unaffordable.
Aviation operators have also expressed concern, noting that airlines already face multiple charges, including Passenger Service Charge, Ticket Sales Tax, Cargo Sales Charge, and a $20 security levy.
Abdullahi accused the APC-led government of pursuing anti-people policies without any cushioning measures, citing the removal of fuel subsidy, devaluation of the naira, and rising debt burden.
He argued that the Tinubu administration has worsened poverty levels, with most Nigerians earning below the global extreme poverty line, even under the proposed new minimum wage.
“What exactly did we vote this government to do—to kill us?” Abdullahi asked, stressing that Nigerians would not hesitate to reject the ruling party in the next general election.
