The All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially endorsed the incumbent Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, as its consensus candidate for the 2025 governorship election in the state.
In a letter dated October 13, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the party formally announced a shift from the direct primary mode earlier approved to a consensus arrangement, in line with Sections 84(9) and 84(11) of the Electoral Act, 2022.
According to the letter, signed by the APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, and the National Secretary, Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, only two aspirants—Governor Oyebanji and Mrs. Atinuke Oluremi Omolayo—were cleared to participate in the party’s primary election.
However, Mrs. Omolayo voluntarily stepped down from the race and conveyed her decision in a formal letter to the party’s national leadership, endorsing Governor Oyebanji as the preferred candidate of the APC in Ekiti State.
“The Party has received a letter from Mrs. Omolayo conveying her voluntary decision to withdraw from the contest and expressing her endorsement of Governor Oyebanji as the consensus candidate,” the letter stated.
Following her withdrawal, the APC said it was bound by law to adopt the consensus option, as provided by the Electoral Act, once all cleared aspirants agree on a single candidate.
To complete the process, the party has scheduled a Special Nomination Congress to ratify Governor Oyebanji’s candidacy on Monday, October 27, 2025, at the Ekiti State Pavilion, New Iyin Road, Ado-Ekiti.
INEC has been formally notified and invited to monitor the exercise, which will officially confirm Governor Oyebanji as the APC flag bearer for the 2025 Ekiti Governorship Election.
