200 level students of Media Relations of the Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere Ekiti (BOUESTI )has presented the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Ekiti State Council with office table and chairs.
The students who were at the Union’s secretariat on a courtesy visit on Thursday, led by the Media Relations lecturer of the Institution , Mrs Omolabake Akinyemi-Oke said the gesture was to demonstrate what they were taught in class by having good relationship with the media.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of journalists, Ekiti state Council, Comrade Kayode Babatuyi who said media relation was central to the success of any organisation or personnel, urged the students to build cordial relationship with the media.
In his word, ” No matter great your organisation is doing, if you don’t have cordial relationship with the media, your success story will not be aired or published. Media have the power to make or mar, hence media project both organisation’s and individual image”
The chairman listed requirements for media relations to include: effective communication, integrity availability, regular engagement, telling success story of an organisation, fear and respect journalists, given back to journalists via capacity building among others. He reiterated that doing all the aforementioned would strengthen the bond between an organisation and journalists.
Contributing to the discussion, NAWOJ Chairman, Mrs Wunmi Ademiju and Lawrence Ibitoye urged the students to utilise the new media space to start practising and ensure they build good relationship with people that come across their way.
Mrs Omolabake Akinyemi-Oke, a lecturer of BOUESTI appreciated the Chairman for sparing time to impact knowledge on the students, saying what they have learnt would complement what they were taught in the classroom.
