A church community in Ijegun, Lagos, has been thrown into mourning following a tragic incident in which its choir leader was electrocuted while allegedly helping suspected robbers steal newly acquired musical instruments.
The incident occurred late at night, just days after the church installed a brand-new sound system. According to eyewitness accounts, the suspects gained access to the church by breaking a hole through the wall before carting away the instruments.
Shockingly, the church’s choir leader, a trusted and well-known member of the congregation, was said to have assisted the thieves in moving the equipment. He was reportedly the last person to leave the premises when tragedy struck.
While attempting to exit the church with some of the stolen items, he allegedly came into contact with an exposed electrical cable. Witnesses said a loud crackling sound was heard before he collapsed. He was electrocuted and died instantly at the scene, while the other suspects reportedly fled.
The development has left members of the church in deep shock and disbelief. Many described the deceased as passionate and committed to the church, making the circumstances surrounding his death particularly painful and difficult to comprehend.
Security experts have since warned against the dangers of tampering with electrical installations and engaging in criminal activities, noting that such acts often come with fatal consequences.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities are yet to issue an official statement or make any arrests. Meanwhile, the incident has reignited public concern over church security in Lagos and the devastating impact of betrayal from within.
