Ekiti State Commissioner for Infrastructure and Public Utilities, Prof. Mobolaji Aluko has charged
contractors handling the drilling of
110 solar-powered boreholes and construction of toilets and sanitation facilities across the State under the Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and
Hygiene (SURWASH) Programme , to adhere to specifications and contract time frame , stressing that Governor Oyebanji’s administration has zero tolerance for shoddy jobs
Prof. Aluko who gave the charge during an inspection tour of the projects in Ado-Ekiti and other Local Government Areas in Ekiti Central and Ekiti South Senatorial Districts of the State, urged the contractors to put in their best so that the objectives of the SURWASH programme to improve access to Water supply, Sanitation and Hygiene Services across the State are realized
He observed during the inspection
that some boreholes had high yield and consequently directed that such boreholes should be reticulated and metered to serve needs of the people in the environment.
The Commissioner also advised benefiting communities to support efforts at making
life more meaningful for the people, stressing the need for them to take ownership of
the facilities for proper maintenance and sustainability of the project
According to him, benefiting communities must have representatives
that would ensure proper monitoring of the projects, emphasizing the
need for all stakeholders to work towards the success of the projects
particularly in view of the “Programme for Result”(P for R)feature of the project as reimbursement on funds expended on the project is premised on the success and impact of the projects.
The Permanent Secretary to the Ministry Engr Olumide Ajayi, emphasized the need for
functional Sanitation and hand washing basin in schools and Health centers and advised them to place it in a strategic place for maximum use.
In her remarks, the Principal of , one of the benefitting schools , Mrs Adenike Adebiyi of Eleyo High School,Ikere expressed appreciation to the Governor Biodun
Oyebanji for his efforts to improve the lots of the people, noting that
water had been a major challenge facing the school for decades before the intervention of SURWASH .She pledged proper monitoring and maintenance upon completion
The ongoing 110 WASH projects consists of solar-powered boreholes to be located in 55 schools and 55 health centres across the state with each of the 16 Local Government Areas and 22 Local Council Development Areas getting two units, with additional two units for each LG and an extra two for Ado LGA
