The Ekiti State Government has directed construction firms, tipper operators and road transport unions to fully comply with safety and environmental regulations governing the transportation of construction materials by March 31, 2026.
The directive was issued by the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Erelu Tosin Aluko-Ajisafe, during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Ado-Ekiti with construction companies, the Union of Tippers, Suppliers and Quarry Employers of Nigeria (Ekiti State Chapter), and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
Addressing participants, the Commissioner decried the dangers associated with the indiscriminate movement and offloading of sand, gravel, laterite and granite across the state. She noted that the use of uncovered vehicles often results in spillage, damage to roads, blocked drainages and avoidable road accidents, posing serious risks to lives and property. According to her, the practice also places additional financial pressure on the state due to frequent road repairs and debris evacuation.
Earlier in his remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Sunday Omoya, welcomed stakeholders and urged them to collaborate with the government in promoting environmental safety and safeguarding public health.
Speaking on behalf of the unions, NURTW representative, Mr. Akinluyi Kayode, appealed for a grace period to allow adequate sensitization of drivers, while Mr. Lawrence Ojo Asamo requested the issuance of an official circular from the Ministry to enhance compliance.

Representing construction companies, Mr. Adejobi Adeolu of Leadgate Global Construction revealed that his firm had already begun internal enforcement of the directive and called for broader sensitization to include companies and clients outside Ado-Ekiti.
In her response, Aluko-Ajisafe announced a two-month grace period, which will elapse on March 31, after which full enforcement and sanctions would take effect. She assured stakeholders that the Ministry would embark on extensive publicity and issue official communications to ensure widespread awareness.
Resolutions reached at the meeting include the compulsory covering of construction materials with tarpaulin during transportation, immediate cleanup of any spillage on roads, and a ban on indiscriminate roadside offloading of construction materials.
The Ekiti State Government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public health, preserving road infrastructure and maintaining a safe and clean environment for residents across the state.
