The Ekiti State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has announced plans to decorate Yeye Are Modupe Babalola, wife of renowned legal luminary and founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti (ABUAD), as its Matron.
In a statement jointly signed by the Council’s Chairman, Comrade Kayode Babatuyi, and Secretary, Comrade O’Seun Ogunsakin, the Union explained that the decision was inspired by Yeye Babalola’s steadfast support for journalism and her appreciation of the media’s vital role in shaping national discourse.
According to the statement, Yeye Babalola’s visionary leadership, philanthropy, and commitment to the promotion of excellence have continued to inspire the journalism profession in Ekiti and beyond. The Union further noted her enduring concern for the welfare of journalists and their families, describing her as “a beacon of hope and encouragement to the media community.”
The decoration ceremony is scheduled to take place on Monday, October 14, 2025, at the Senate Chamber of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, by 10:00 a.m.
“As our Matron, we are confident that Yeye Are Modupe Babalola will continue to guide and support the Union, drawing from her wealth of experience and influence to further the interests of journalists in Ekiti State,” the statement read in part. “We remain deeply grateful for her consistent advocacy for journalists’ welfare and her unwavering commitment to the ideals of the Nigeria Union of Journalists.”
The highlight of the event will be the presentation of an Award of Excellence to Yeye Babalola, which will be performed by the Secretary to the Ekiti State Government, Prof. Habibat Adubiaro.
