Responding to Federal Ministry of Environment warning on flood, the Ekiti State Government has fully commenced dredging in key flood-prone areas of Ado Ekiti.
The Ministry’s warning had flagged Ado Ekiti among vulnerable locations across the country at risk of flooding due to predicted heavy rainfall patterns. Acting on this alert, the Ekiti State Environmental Protection and Watershed Management Agency has mobilized to two major sites simultaneously — the Iremide/Afao Road river channel and the Olujoda–Falana–Moferere river channels.
Speaking on the development, the General Manager of the Agency, Mr. Kayode Adunmo, said the dredging exercise is aimed at desilting and widening water channels to improve flow capacity, prevent blockages, and reduce the threat of flooding to surrounding communities.
“The early warning from the Federal Ministry of Environment was a call for urgent action. We are committed to ensuring that our waterways are cleared and expanded to allow free flow of water and safeguard lives and property,” Adunmo stated.
He added that similar dredging interventions are ongoing across other local government areas in the state as part of Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s proactive environmental management policy.
The General Manager also urged residents living near the dredging sites to cooperate with the work teams and desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drainage systems, noting that blocked waterways remain a major cause of flooding in the state.
