The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, convened his maiden conference with Senior Police Officers at the Peacekeeping Conference Centre, Force Headquarters, Abuja.
The high-level meeting brought together strategic managers of the Nigeria Police Force for comprehensive deliberations on institutional priorities and pressing national security concerns.
The conference, the first formal strategic engagement between the IGP and the senior leadership cadre since his assumption of office, was aimed at harmonising operational directives, strengthening command responsibility, and establishing clear performance benchmarks for the new administration.
In his keynote address, IGP Disu charged senior officers to demonstrate exemplary leadership, enforce discipline firmly, and maintain the highest standards of ethics and professionalism. He announced plans to reinforce and revitalise internal accountability structures, particularly the Complaints Response Unit and the X-Squad, to ensure strict compliance with the law and eliminate misconduct within the Force.
Reaffirming his reform agenda, the IGP emphasised a shift towards intelligence-led, evidence-based and technology-driven policing. He highlighted the need for improved inter-agency coordination, a stronger intelligence framework, and sustained investment in modern investigative tools to enhance operational efficiency.
A major highlight of the conference was the formal inauguration of the Steering Committee on the Establishment of State Police. Describing the task as timely and significant, IGP Disu noted that the initiative forms part of ongoing national efforts to address evolving security challenges, deepen community participation, and bring policing closer to the grassroots.
According to him, the proposed State Police structure is not designed to supplant the Nigeria Police Force but to operate as a complementary arm within a coordinated national security architecture that promotes cohesion and institutional effectiveness.
The committee has been mandated to review existing policing models locally and internationally; assess community security demands and emerging threats; develop an operational framework for State Police structures; address recruitment, training, standards and resource allocation; and propose strong accountability and oversight mechanisms to guarantee professionalism and public trust.
Members of the committee include Prof. Olu Ogunsakin, Director-General, National Institute for Police Studies, Jabi, Abuja, who will serve as Chairman; CP Bode Ojajuni as Secretary; DCP Okebechi Agora; DCP Suleyman Gulma; ACP Ikechukwu Okafor; CSP Tolulope Ipinmisho; and CP Emmanuel Ojukwu (Rtd), Provost, Police Public Relations School.
