No one remains on earth forever; every soul must answer the call at the appointed time. ( Awaye ma lo kosi) On Monday, 11th November, one of Ekiti’s finest and most courageous traditional rulers, His Royal Majesty, Oba Makanjuola Ajaja, PhD—Owatapa of Itapa-Ekiti, Ilufemiloye Ola III—peacefully departed this world, leaving his people in deep sorrow.
The news of Oba Ajaja’s passing came as a great shock to the entire community, traditional rulers in Ekiti state, especially, his closest ally, Oba Sunday Awe Akingbade who described his death as a collosal loss not only to Itapa Ekiti but Nigeria, saying Owatapa was endowed in all facets . Installed in November 2011, he reigned for 14 purposeful years marked by excellence, bravery, and an unwavering commitment to the progress of Itapa-Ekiti.
A bold, erudite and eloquent monarch, Oba Ajaja was widely admired for his fearlessness, integrity, and genuine love for his people. He spoke the truth with clarity, led with conviction, and worked tirelessly to advance the development and cultural heritage of Itapa. His reign witnessed notable improvements in community unity, infrastructural growth, and social advancement—legacies that will endure for generations.
His departure is not just a loss to the town but to the entire Ekiti traditional institution. The people of Itapa-Ekiti, both at home and in the diaspora, are united in grief as they bid farewell to a king whose impact transcended boundaries. Indeed, Oba Ajaja will be sorely missed.
Following his transition, Mrs. Fadekemi Ogunleye (née Ajaja) has been installed as the Regent of Itapa-Ekiti, ensuring continuity in leadership as tradition demands.
At this moment of collective mourning, precise news management commiserate with the people of Itapa-Ekiti and pray for strength, comfort, and unity as they navigate this period of loss. Oba Makanjuola Ajaja’s memory will remain evergreen in the history of the town, he served with passion and distinction , may his soul rest in peace.
