The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria has conducted an inspection of the State Specialist Hospital Ikere-Ekiti in readiness of accreditation of the hospital’s housemanship programme.
Addressing critical stakeholders during the inspection,the leader of the accreditation team and the Deputy Registrar of the Council, Dr Nwemeka Nwakanma stated that the accreditation visit was part of the process to ensure that necessary equipment, facilities and personnel are on ground for proper training of the medical students.
Dr Nwakanma noted that the team was not a fault finding one, but one that is primed towards ensuring that the core vision of the council , which is to regulate the practice of medicine, dentistry and alternative medicine in the most efficient manner and safeguard the best best healthcare delivery for Nigerians are met
The Council’s Deputy Registrar said that the visit was to also to ensure that the Specialist Hospital Ikere-Ekiti as a training institution, was made conducive, properly equipped for adequate and effective training of the medical officers.
While calling on the management of the hospital to fix the identified gaps, the leader of the team assured the state of a positive report on the accreditation exercise.
He commended the Ekiti government for transforming the healthcare system of rhe state which he noted has made the council to recently double number of medical students intake into the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital
In his remarks, the Chairman, Hospital’s Management Board, Dr Austine Ibikunle said that Ekiti State government has invested much in transforming the state health sector.
Dr Ibikunle noted that Governor Biodun Oyebanji has renovated and equipped nine General hospitals, adding that the salaries of health workers in the State was competitive and encouraging compared to the Federal and other states in Nigeria.
The Permanent Secretary Hospital’s Management Board, Dr Olasunkanmi Alabi disclosed that the facilities was accredited in year 2016 for a period of five years and expressed hope that it would be accredited to allow medical officers to undergo their housemanship training there.
Dr Alabi said that the state government has been very passionate about health matters assuring that the facility would be made conducive. available and properly equipped with relevant personnel to ensure the success of the housemanship programme.
The accreditation team include: Prof.Ernest Anyabolu, Prof. Edwin Eseigbe, Prof. Steven Yiltok and Prof.Uche Onwudiegwu.
Others are Mr Daniel Tyovenda and Mr David Omoregie.
