As part of activities marking the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the Chairperson of Moba Local Government, Mrs. Labake Fadugba, again led the council’s Gender-Based Violence (GBV) team on a sensitization tour across major markets within the local government area.
Addressing market women, Mrs. Fadugba emphasized the importance of speaking out against domestic violence, noting that silence continues to fuel abuse in many homes. She encouraged victims and witnesses to promptly report cases to the Gender-Based Violence Unit at the Moba Local Government Secretariat, assuring them of government-backed support and swift legal action against offenders.
She further condemned long-standing harmful traditional practices such as female genital mutilation, degrading widowhood rites, and cultural norms that endanger or demean women, describing them as outdated and illegal. According to her, anyone caught engaging in such acts will face prosecution under the newly enacted Gender-Based Violence (Prohibition) Bye-Law, 2025, already operational in Moba Local Government.
The sensitization drive aligns with the administration of the Executive Chairman, Hon. Bamidele Julius Fadugba, who has shown strong commitment to ensuring the safety, dignity, and empowerment of women and girls across the local government.
Mrs. Fadugba expressed profound appreciation to the First Lady of Ekiti State, Dr. (Mrs.) Olayemi Oyebanji, for her unwavering support in the fight against harmful traditional practices statewide. She commended the First Lady for ensuring that the campaign reaches every grassroots community.
She also thanked her husband, Hon. Bamidele Julius Fadugba, for his continuous encouragement and full support towards the success of the initiative. Additionally, she acknowledged the dedication of the Director of Community and Gender, the Health Educator, and the Gender Unit Team for their hard work and collaborative spirit in driving the campaign.
With the ongoing sensitization, Moba Local Government reinforces its determination to build a community where women and girls are safe, empowered, and free from all forms of violence.
