Adekunle Ajasin University Alumni Association has disclosed plans to induct two popular groundnut sellers in the university as honorary members of the alumni association as part of programmes outlined for the 2024 national convention.
In a statement issued in Ado Ekiti on Monday by the Association’s National Events and Publicity Officer, O’Seun Ogunsakin, the Association said the decision to confer on Mrs Nimota Yunusa and Mrs Mulika Mustapha who sell groundnut the honorary membership of the alumni association is to show appreciation to the duo for the encouragement they have been providing for students who patronize them.
Ogunsakin said the two women popularly known as Iya Chemistry and Iya Computer endeared themselves to the hearts of students by providing emotional support, counsels and sometimes free groundnuts to students across generations since the university came into existence in 1999.
The national convention of the association is scheduled for 20th and 21st December 2024 in Akungba Akoko with a number of activities such as the convention lecture titled ‘Revisiting University Sustainability: The Roles of the Alumni Association’ to be delivered by Prof. Benson Igboin while a new set of leaders will be elected at the biennial convention.
The National Events and Publicity Officer also disclosed that the Association will also redeem its prize for the university’s overall best graduating student for the 2023/2024 session.
He said the prize was instituted by the Alumni body to encourage scholarship among students and promote healthy competition among them.
Ogunsakin said the Dr Olumide Olugbemi-Gabriel-led national executive committee was not happy that the monetary value of many of the prizes given to best graduating students are not encouraging hence students’ lackluster attitude to academics hence the #250,000 Alumni prize for overall Best Graduating Student.
He assured that the Alumni body would continue to sustain the prize as mechanisms have been put in place to ensure that the prize outlives successive administrations.
