The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, Ekiti state Chapter has cautioned the Practitioners of Female Genital Mutilation, (FGM) to desist from the obsolete traditional practice in the interest of humanity, saying strict penalties would be enforced.
NAWOJ gave the submission in commemoration of this year’s International Day of Zero Tolerance to FGM, celebrated every 6th of February. The theme for 2024 is “Her Voice.”
The NAWOJ Chairperson Fatima Bello in a statement by the Secretary, Adewumi Ademiju urged government and relevant authorities to step up action in order to meet up with the global projection on eradication of the FGM by 2030.
” This year’s theme ‘ Her Voice’ is timely as concerted efforts such as enforcement of laws and policies put in place would help in many ways to end the obsolete cultural practice.”
The statement added that the voice of the victim is also a bell on prompt intervention by the authorities to safeguard the Female Child.
NAWOJ appreciated and commended government, Gender activists, Civil society organizations and other relevant bodies on Sensitization against the practice of female Genital Mutilation with the urge on regular efforts to nip menace in the bud .
