The Chairman of the Online Media Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ekiti State Council, Comrade Ayodele Abere, has charged online journalists to uphold the highest standards of accuracy and verification in their reportage as he extended Christmas greetings to media practitioners across the state.
Speaking in Ado-Ekiti, Comrade Abere cautioned that the speed associated with online publishing must not overshadow the fundamental responsibility of verifying information before dissemination, particularly during periods when misinformation spreads rapidly.
He noted that online journalism plays a vital role in shaping public opinion and informing society, stressing that unverified or misleading reports could erode public trust, trigger unnecessary panic, and undermine the credibility of the journalism profession.

The NUJ Online Media Chairman reminded practitioners that truth, balance and accountability remain the core values of journalism, irrespective of the platform used. He urged journalists to resist the temptation to publish unconfirmed stories in the pursuit of traffic, visibility or popularity.
Describing Christmas as a season of reflection and renewed responsibility, Comrade Abere encouraged online journalists to use the period to recommit themselves to ethical journalism and professional excellence.
He further assured members of the Online Media Chapel of the union’s continued support through training, collaboration and advocacy initiatives aimed at strengthening digital journalism practice in Ekiti State.
Comrade Abere concluded by wishing all online journalists in Ekiti State a peaceful and joyous Christmas celebration and a successful New Year, urging them to celebrate responsibly while remaining steadfast in their commitment to credible and responsible journalism.
