Police Service Commission stated that a total of 630 Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) sat for the written examination at the Commission’s Parry Osayande Auditorium, Corporate Headquarters, Jabi, Abuja, as part of the process for their promotion to the rank of Superintendent of Police.
Declaring the exercise open, Honourable Commissioner representing the Judiciary in the Commission, Justice Paul Adamu Galumje (rtd), said the PSC will continue to encourage officers to broaden their knowledge and sharpen their mental capacity for effective policing. He stressed that the future of officers in the Force will henceforth be tied to the outcome of promotion examinations.
Also addressing the candidates, DIG Taiwo Lakanu (rtd), fdc, Chairman of the Commission’s Standing Committee on Police Matters, described the examinations as both necessary and timely. He maintained that the initiative will help rebuild the public image of the Nigeria Police.
“There is systemic rot in the Force, which has eroded public trust. Unlike other security agencies, the Police had no tradition of promotion examinations. We have now introduced this system to instill merit and credibility. If you fail, you fail. The process will continue and, over time, it will help restore the pride of the institution,” he said.
DIG Lakanu further warned candidates against offering bribes to Commission staff, stressing that any officer caught attempting to influence the process will be disqualified.
The promotion examinations and interviews will continue next week with the Commissioner’s cadre, while a Plenary Meeting of the Commission is scheduled later in the month.
Chairman of the Commission, DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), mni, reaffirmed the PSC’s commitment to ensuring that Police promotions are timely, transparent, credible, and merit-driven.
He emphasized that promotions must be earned and justified, adding that the new system will give officers greater respect and legitimacy in the eyes of the public.
“The Police of our dream is one that delivers with minimal supervision and without undue influence,” the Chairman stated.
