A renowned Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Idowu Ade-Ojo, has urged Nigerians to embrace healthy and balanced lives that reflect their faith and values.
Ade-Ojo gave the advice at the 2025 Annual General Meeting of the Association of Pharmaceutical Products Marketers of Nigeria, Ekiti State Chapter, themed: “APPMAN Ekiti 2025: Harvest of Excellence,” held in Ado-Ekiti.
The Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, who was the Guest Speaker, delivered his paper titled: “The Interplay Between Nature and Nurture in Healthy Living and Longevity.”
He explained that the relationship between nature and nurture is complex and bidirectional saying that “genes can influence how we respond to environmental factors, and conversely, our lifestyle choices can affect gene expression. This interplay highlights the importance of a holistic approach to health, one that considers both genetic and environmental factors.”
Ade-Ojo emphasised the importance of understanding the role of nature and nurture in determining health and longevity of every individual.
According to him, “understanding nature in this context, refers to our genetic predispositions that influence our health. Our genes can determine our susceptibility to certain diseases, our physical characteristics, and even our lifespan.
“However, it’s crucial to note that genetic predispositions are not absolute determinants of our health. We have the power to make choices that can mitigate or exacerbate these genetic factors.
“Nurture, on the other hand, encompasses the environmental factors that impact our health. This includes our lifestyle choices, such as diet, exercise, and stress management, as well as our access to healthcare and social connections and cultivate strong social connections.
“By making informed choices, we can significantly influence our health outcomes and increase our chances of living a long, healthy life.”
He went further to highlight some key takeaways that would encourage healthier lifestyles and promote longevity including; eating balanced diet, staying physically active, managing stress, prioritizing sleep and relaxation and cultivating strong social connections.
Meanwhile, Ade-Ojo, who is a passionate reproductive health advocate and immediate past Chairman of Planned ParentHood Federation of Nigeria, Volunteers, Ekiti State Chapter bagged an Award of Achievement as Community Health Champion from the association.
Earlier, Chairman of APPMAN in Ekiti State, Peter Ajayi said the association remains focused in fostering unity, compliance and the wellbeing of members, thereby contributing significantly to shaping the future of pharmaceutical industry.
He noted that the awardees have distinguished themselves across various sectors of the state economy and urged members of the association to work harmoniously towards a healthier Ekiti State.
