Vice President Kashim Shettima on Saturday paid glowing tribute to former Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose, at his 65th birthday celebration in Lagos, describing him as an uncommon Nigerian defined by courage, boldness, and unfiltered honesty.
Speaking at the well-attended event held at the 10 Degrees Event Centre, Ikeja, the Vice President said Fayose’s fearlessness, consistency, and unwavering conviction have distinguished him in Nigeria’s political history.
According to him, Fayose’s willingness to speak truth to power—regardless of whose ox is gored—has made him “one of the most distinctive figures of the Fourth Republic.”
“Governor Fayose has given the media enough headlines to last several election cycles, and sometimes it feels as though the cameras chase him even when he is simply minding his business,” Shettima said.
“He is a colourful politician, one of the best we have in the system. His convictions are deep, his passion uncontained, and his sincerity—whether one agrees with him or not—is part of the charm and the myth that make Nigeria always reserve a special corner for him in its political climate.
“Today, as we gather to honour a truly remarkable Nigerian, I join his family, friends, and well-wishers nationwide—and on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu—in celebrating this milestone. May this 65th birthday usher you into renewed strength and deeper fulfilment,” he added.

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji, also described Fayose as straightforward, authentic, bold, and clear-minded in politics. He commended the former governor for rising above partisanship to support his administration and contribute to the development of Ekiti State.
“You are straightforward, authentic—what you see is what you get. You are bold, and you mean everything you say. I wish you the best 65th birthday,” Oyebanji stated.
He added: “I am extremely grateful for your support of our administration. Thank you for rising beyond partisanship to become a statesman. You have changed the nature and texture of politics in Ekiti State.”
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr Nyesom Wike, in his goodwill message, described Fayose as a dependable ally, loyal friend, and fearless political figure. He hailed him for his commitment, consistency, and courage—qualities he said have set Fayose apart in Nigerian politics
Responding to the tributes, an elated Fayose expressed gratitude to God for what he called a journey of divine grace. He thanked the Vice President, Governor Oyebanji, Minister Wike, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and other dignitaries for honouring him.
Reflecting on his life’s journey, Fayose said his experiences—pleasant and challenging—had shaped his character and strengthened his resolve to serve humanity. He once again asked for forgiveness from anyone he may have offended during his political career, stressing that reconciliation and unity were crucial for national progress.
The event was graced by several prominent Nigerians, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo; Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa; Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin; Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele; former Ekiti State Governors, Niyi Adebayo and Kayode Fayemi; and the Wife of Ekiti State Governor, Dr Olayemi Oyebanji, among others.
