Ekiti State Waste Management Authority (EKS-WAMA) has revoked the contract of Waste Managers and Private Sector Participants (PSP) operators at Ojaoba Market, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State Capital over their inability to manage the waste process in the vicinity.
Speaking with journalists on Friday at the Market, the Director General of EKSWAMA, Olasunkanmi Onipede lamented over the situation of the environmental exercise of the vicinity, describing it as eyesore and serious embarrassment to the Ministry and state government.
This according to him, made the Ministry to deploy six trucks and four Dino bins to evacuate the accumulated waste, as part of the ongoing efforts to keep Ekiti clean.
He noted that the Ministry was supposed to shut down the entire market through legal processes, but prefers to create an enabling environment for the residents so that their businesses can thrive.
The DG promised to deploy a strong sensitization team within the market to change public attitudes toward waste disposal, while also establishing a task force to enforce compliance, ensuring defaulters face the full weight of the law.
He also used the opportunity to appreciate the State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji for approving over 60 waste trucks for the Ministry, saying this has helped them to record significant improvements.
Also, the acting Permanent Secretary of Ekiti State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Tunde Balogun said the state government has procured about 60,000 refuse bags distributed across the Ado-Ekiti metropolis to discourage indiscriminate dumping.
He appealed to residents to abide by the state’s Environmental Health and Social Law, urging them to also make proper use of the garbage facilities provided for them, instead of engaging in unsafe practices that could harm their health.
