The Federal Ministry of Environment has issued warning of possible flooding in 15 states and several vulnerable communities across the country.
The advisory, released through the Ministry’s National Flood Early Warning Centre (FEWC) and signed by Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood, and Coastal Zone Management Department, listed the affected states as Adamawa, Anambra, Bayelsa, Borno, Delta, Edo, Imo, Kano, Katsina, Ondo, Oyo, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, and Zamfara.
Communities at risk include Yola, Yenagoa, Warri, Benin City, Oguta, Kano, Jibia, Akure, Oyo, Ahoada, Shagari, Serti, and Gusau, among others.
According to the statement, heavy rainfall is expected in these locations, which could trigger flooding in the identified communities and their surroundings.
“Stakeholders are therefore advised to prepare adequately and implement preventive actions,” the ministry cautioned.
The Ministry of Environment explained that the alert forms part of its early-warning mechanism aimed at reducing risks to lives and property during the peak of the rainy season.
Residents, local government authorities, and emergency management agencies have been urged to take proactive measures to minimize the anticipated impact
