The Ekiti State Environmental Protection and Watershed Management Agency (EKSEPWAMA) has stepped up dredging activities in major flood-prone areas of Ado-Ekiti to mitigate the risk of flooding as the rainy season reaches its peak.
The General Manager of the agency, Mr. Kayode Adunmo, said the intervention was part of the state government’s proactive measures to protect lives, property, and public infrastructure from the devastating effects of flooding.
According to him, dredging operations are currently underway at the canal behind the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion, GRA 3rd Extension, NTA area, Amala Spot, Satellite Polytechnic axis, and Abekoko. Similar work is also ongoing at the Olujoda canal beside Winners Chapel in Moferere.
Adunmo explained that the exercise was prompted by recurring flood incidents in the listed areas, noting that the government remained committed to ensuring that residents live in a safe, healthy, and clean environment.
He, however, urged residents to complement government’s efforts by refraining from indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains and waterways.
“The dredging is not only to ensure free flow of water but also to prevent damage to roads, homes, and business premises caused by flooding. We appeal to residents to take ownership of their environment and avoid practices that block canals,” he said.
The EKSEPWAMA boss added that the exercise would be extended to other parts of the state that have been identified as flood-prone.
