The Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has officially inaugurated the branch of the National Association of Non-Teaching Staff of Nigerian Universities (NANTS), marking a new chapter in staff unionism at the institution.
The inauguration, which took place recently at the Faculty of Arts Hall, attracted members of the University Management, the national body of NANTS, and representatives of sister unions from other universities.
Executives of the newly inaugurated branch include: Comrade Afolabi Ganiyu Adelek Adeleye as Chairperson, Samuel Babatunde as Vice Chairperson, Olaiya B. Arise as Secretary, and Jimoh Mariam as Financial Secretary. Others are Adetula Mayokun (Assistant Secretary), Giwa Oluwaseyi (Women Leader), Asauolu Kehinde (Iya Ibeji), Fakorede Benedict (Public Relations Officer), and Adigun Kamoru (Ex-Officio).
Speaking on behalf of FUOYE Management, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (SPRIL), Professor Joshua Ogunwole, warmly welcomed the national body of NANTS and commended the inauguration of the FUOYE branch. He emphasized the importance of freedom of association within the university system.
“We appreciate your support. We adhere to the laws governing our nation, which allow for freedom of expression, movement, and association. When we speak of freedom, we cannot separate the University from this concept,” he said.
Professor Ogunwole stressed that unions must correct the misconception that unionism equals hooliganism. He encouraged the new branch to set exemplary standards in collaboration with management and government. “Unionism focuses on representing the interests of members, and no management should be hostile to such ideals. There are many goals management cannot achieve alone; collaboration with unions is essential,” he added.
Delivering his inaugural address, the Acting Chairperson of NANTS FUOYE branch, Comrade Afolabi Ganiyu, described the event as a “historic occasion” and expressed appreciation to the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olubunmi Shittu, for granting expedited approval to the association.
“This approval strongly affirms the University’s commitment to fairness, inclusiveness, and staff welfare. Thank you for believing in our vision and for allowing us to contribute meaningfully to the development of this esteemed institution,” he stated.
He also acknowledged the solidarity received from NANTS leadership at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and Federal University of Technology, Akure, as well as sister unions within FUOYE. According to him, their counsel and encouragement sustained the group during difficult times.
Comrade Afolabi praised the resilience of pioneer executives and members, noting that despite intimidation and resistance from NASU leadership at various levels, they persevered in the pursuit of justice and self-determination. “This association is not born out of rebellion but out of necessity—a necessity to create a platform that champions the rights, dignity, and aspirations of non-teaching staff across Nigerian universities,” he affirmed.
He outlined the vision of the union as “to be the leading voice for non-teaching staff in Nigerian universities, promoting professionalism, equity, and respect for all staff members.” The mission, he added, is to build a united and proactive community that prioritizes welfare, professional growth, and institutional recognition.
In his conclusion, the Chairperson charged members to remain united and focused on their collective objectives. “No union thrives without unity. Let us remain united, focused, and motivated by our shared vision for the welfare of our members. On this day, let history record that we did not just inaugurate a union—we ignited a revolution,” he declared.
The ceremony featured the oath-taking of the new executives and other formalities to mark the official birth of the FUOYE branch of NANTS.
