President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has postponed his scheduled trips to South Africa and Angola for the G-20 and AU-EU summits following fresh security breaches in Kebbi and Kwara states.
The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed the development in a statement on Wednesday.
Tinubu was earlier expected to travel to Johannesburg for the G-20 Summit before proceeding to Luanda for the AU-EU Summit. However, Onanuga said the President decided to suspend the trips to focus on the attack on worshippers at the Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Kwara State, and the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State.
According to the statement, President Tinubu has ordered the deployment of additional security personnel to Eruku and the entire Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, with a firm directive to track down the perpetrators of the attack.
“In response to the request by the governor of Kwara State, President Tinubu has ordered the deployment of more security men to Eruku and the entire Ekiti Local Government Area of the state, and directed the police to go after the bandits who attacked worshippers,” Onanuga stated.
The President is also expected to receive further security briefings on the kidnapped students in Kebbi State and the attack on church worshippers in Kwara.
On Tuesday, Tinubu had directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to visit Kebbi State to commiserate with the government and people over the abduction of 25 students of Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, and the killing of the Vice Principal, Malam Hassan Makuku.
He also reiterated his order to security agencies to ensure the safe rescue of the remaining 24 abducted schoolgirls and return them home unharmed.
