A professor of industrial mathematics at Ekiti State University, Professor Michael Oluwafemi Oke, has called on universities across Nigeria to introduce industrial mathematics into their academic programs, saying the discipline is crucial to producing graduates capable of solving the country’s real-life and industrial challenges.
Professor Oke made the call while delivering the university’s 107th inaugural lecture titled “Seeking the Best Way in Solving Real-Life Problems Using Mathematics Concepts: The Beauty of Optimal Techniques.” He argued that mathematics should no longer be viewed as a theoretical subject but as a practical tool for driving innovation, economic growth, and sustainable national development.
According to him, industrial mathematics bridges the gap between classroom knowledge and practical applications in engineering, medicine, business, manufacturing row technology, and public administration. He said exposing students to the discipline would equip them with analytical and problem-solving skills required in today’s rapidly changing world.
He further proposed the establishment of a two-year postgraduate program in Mathematics for Industry, explaining that such a program would prepare graduates for mathematics-oriented careers while strengthening their ability to solve industrial problems through research, innovation, and effective communication.

Professor Oke also advocated increased government investment in mathematics education, urging authorities to provide modern laboratories, advanced software, and scholarships for exceptionally talented students. According to him, encouraging young people to study mathematics will strengthen Nigeria’s scientific and technological capacity.
The inaugural lecturer stressed that mathematics underpins virtually every aspect of human endeavor, noting that optimization techniques have applications in electricity, transportation, healthcare, engineering, and resource management. He maintained that strengthening mathematics education would enhance the nation’s ability to address complex developmental challenges.
Speaking at the event, the vice-chancellor of Ekiti State University, Professor Joseph Babatola Ayodele, described Professor Oke as a distinguished scholar whose research has demonstrated the practical relevance of mathematics in solving societal problems. He noted that the lecture reflected the university’s commitment to impactful research and innovation.
The lecture attracted principal officers of the university; members of the Governing Council and Senate; heads of tertiary institutions; deans of faculties; traditional rulers, including the Oba Jacob Boluade Adebiyi; as well as academics and students who commended the inaugural lecturer’s contributions to advancing industrial mathematics in Nigeria.
