The International Institute of Journalism (IIJ), Ado-Ekiti Campus, has unveiled activities for its 2026 Students’ Representative Council (SRC) Week, with a call on students to embrace professionalism, creativity, unity and excellence in their journalism careers.
The student week, themed “Beyond Headlines: Knowledge, Creativity, Unity and Excellence,” was unveiled at a press conference attended by students, lecturers, media practitioners and the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ekiti State Council.
The Student Representative Council President, Comrade Toba Fatunla, said the week was designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical journalism, adding that seasoned journalists and media professionals would engage students during the programme. Activities lined up include symposium, friendly football match with media stakeholders, dinner and awards ceremony.
Fatunla urged students to take their professional training seriously, particularly in an era where social media has blurred the line between trained journalists and content creators. The IIJ Campus Coordinator, Pastor Dare Daniel, similarly urged students to combine certificates with practical skills, stressing that journalism requires credibility, accuracy and public trust.
The NUJ Ekiti State Council Chairman commended the students for organising the programme and assured them of the union’s support. He urged aspiring journalists to prepare for the demands of the profession, noting that the NUJ would continue to support efforts aimed at protecting journalism from quackery and preserving its professional integrity
