Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology (BOUESTI), Ikere-Ekiti, has assured its retirees that outstanding pension payments will be settled, saying the delay was caused by paucity of funds and a technical upgrade of its payment gateway by its bankers.
The assurance followed Monday’s protest by some university retirees over delayed pension payments. In a statement on Tuesday, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Andrew Babatunde Omojola, said the university currently owed pension for August 2026 and 50 per cent of July, expressing optimism that the August pension would be paid on or before September 19, 2026.

Omojola said the delay was not deliberate, stressing that the university had consistently paid pensions monthly and that the August delay was the first occurrence. He added that Management had also planned to pay the outstanding half of July pension within the same period, while noting that the institution had spent ₦4.88 billion on pension, gratuity, death pension and pension arrears obligations between 2021 and June 2026.
The Vice-Chancellor said Management had engaged the executive of the Retirees Association before the protest to explain the university’s financial challenges, and appealed to the retirees to remain calm while payment processes were concluded. He reaffirmed Management’s commitment to retirees’ welfare and urged the public and media to disregard claims that the university had abandoned its pension obligations
