Preparations are in top gear for the 2026 Ijan-Day celebration, with residents of Ijan-Ekiti expressing excitement ahead of the annual event scheduled for Saturday, November 14, at the Onijan Palace Grounds.
The celebration will feature cultural displays, football competitions among youths from the town’s three quarters, a free medical outreach, the introduction of a Hall of Fame and the emergence of a new Olu Omo of Ijan-Ekiti.
Chairman of the Planning Committee at home, High Chief Ilesanmi Adegbite, popularly known as Arijoodi, said significant progress had been made towards ensuring a memorable celebration that would surpass the previous edition.
Adegbite commended the enthusiasm displayed by elders, men, women and youths across the community, describing their participation and commitment as encouraging.
He expressed confidence that the 2026 edition would be more spectacular, with activities designed to promote the town’s cultural heritage, strengthen unity and recognise individuals who had contributed to its growth and development.
According to him, the free medical outreach, which attracted attention during the previous edition, will return on a bigger scale to provide medical consultations for elderly residents and other members of the community at no cost. He explained that medical consultants, who are sons and daughters of Ijan-Ekiti, would be available to offer professional services during the exercise.
The planning committee chairman also announced the introduction of a Hall of Fame to recognise and honour outstanding sons and daughters of Ijan whose achievements, dedication and selfless contributions have positively impacted the community.
Another initiative, he said, would be the recognition of outstanding living legends whose leadership, accomplishments and commitment to the development of Ijan Kingdom had enhanced the town’s reputation.
Adegbite added that the honourees would be celebrated for their remarkable achievements and contributions to the community. The emergence of a new Olu Omo of Ijan-Ekiti is expected to be one of the major highlights of the celebration.
The prestigious recognition will be conferred on a respected indigene considered to have demonstrated exemplary character, responsibility, dedication and commitment to the values and traditions of the town.
Meanwhile, the annual football competition among youths from the town’s three quarters is generating excitement, with participants preparing to compete for the championship title and coveted winners’ cup.
The competition is expected to add to the festive atmosphere while promoting unity, sportsmanship and healthy rivalry among the youths.
Ijan-Day is an annual celebration that brings together indigenes and residents to showcase the community’s cultural heritage, celebrate its achievements and promote collective development.
With preparations gathering momentum, expectations are high that the November 14 celebration will provide an opportunity for cultural expression, community bonding and recognition of individuals who have distinguished themselves in the service of Ijan-Ekiti.
