The National Association of Nigerian Students in Diaspora has commiserated with the families and relatives of those who lost their lives in mass stabbing in Southport; England and Northern Ireland on 29 July.
A statement made available to journalists by the Public Relations Officer, NANS-Diaspora,Comrade Olajesu Osalade, condemned the violence and urged Nigerian students in Hull, Liverpool, Manchester, Middlesbrough, Sunderland, Rotherham, Bristol, Belfast, and Stoke-on-Trent to
exercise caution, stay informed through reliable sources, and avoid violent areas.
While assuring the students that
NANS-Diaspora is working closely with local authorities, Nigerian embassies, and community leaders to ensure the safety of students, adding that the students body is giving support to those who may need assistance during the challenging time.
The statement reads in part, we
express deep concern over the recent unrest and violence in various parts of England and Northern Ireland. We unequivocally condemn the rioting that has erupted since 30 July 2024, following the tragic events in Southport on 29 July. Our hearts go out to all those affected by these incidents.
First, we do extend our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives or were injured in the tragic mass stabbing in Southport on 29 July. This senseless act of violence has left a profound impact on the community, and our thoughts and prayers are with all those grieving during this difficult time.
We encourage students to reach out to their local NANS-Diaspora representatives for any support or information they may need.
We call for peace and understanding, emphasizing that violence and misinformation only serve to divide communities and create further harm. It is crucial to address grievances through dialogue and lawful means, and we stand ready to support efforts that promote harmony and mutual respect.
We urge the Nigerian student community to remain united and resilient in the face of adversity. As Nigerians, we are known for our strength, resilience, and unity. Let us embody these values and continue to support one another, upholding the spirit of togetherness and solidarity. Despite the challenges we face, let us remain focused on our educational pursuits and personal development
