The Apeju of Ilupeju-Ekiti, His Royal Majesty, Oba Sunday David Awe Akingbade I, has offered royal blessings to all sons and daughters of the community, praying for greater progress, peace, prosperity and sustained development during the 2026 New Yam Festival.
The revered monarch declared that the growth and success of Ilupeju-Ekiti indigenes, both at home and in the diaspora, would translate into accelerated development and lasting peace in the community.
Oba Akingbade made the remarks during the annual New Yam Festival held on Sunday at the historic Udi Uto Market Square in Ilupeju-Ekiti, where he described prayers for the well-being of his subjects and the protection of the kingdom as one of his foremost responsibilities.
According to the traditional ruler, the festival remains a sacred occasion to express gratitude to God for His faithfulness, protection and abundant harvest, while seeking divine intervention against calamities and praying for continuous peace, unity and prosperity in Ilupeju-Ekiti.
“The essence of this celebration is to thank God for preserving our lives, protecting our land and blessing our people. We also pray for greater peace, progress and prosperity for every son and daughter of Ilupeju-Ekiti,” the monarch said.
In line with tradition, the Elegbe of Ilupeju-Ekiti, High Chief Michael Alonge, and the Alamoeku, Chief Agbanifa Awofemi, led traditional prayers in the presence of the Obanla of Ilupeju-Ekiti, His Highness Sunday Olukayode Ogunsola, members of the Apeju-in-Council, traditional chiefs, warlords, age-grade groups, youths and other community stakeholders.
The festival also attracted dignitaries, including the Chairman of the Ifeloju Local Council Development Area, Hon. Olusola Michael Oniyelu, who congratulated the Apeju, members of the traditional council and all Ilupeju-Ekiti indigenes for sustaining the rich cultural heritage of the town through the annual celebration.
Following the traditional rites and prayers, Oba Akingbade led members of the royal family, Apeju in Council, wives of the royal family, residents and other participants in a colourful procession from Udi Uto through Iyana-Ire to the Apeju Palace amid singing, dancing and jubilation.
At the palace, the Apeju offered royal prayers and blessings for each member of the Apeju-in-Council, one after another.
A major highlight of the festival was the monarch’s royal proclamation officially permitting traders to commence the sale of newly harvested yams at the Menara Market from the next market day, marking the formal opening of the new yam season in Ilupeju-Ekiti.
The annual New Yam Festival remains one of the community’s most cherished cultural events, symbolising thanksgiving, unity, agricultural prosperity and the preservation of the rich customs and traditions of Ilupeju-Ekiti.
