The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ekiti Sector Command, has commenced a joint enforcement and public enlightenment patrol with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) to promote safer road use during the Ember Months.
The exercise, according to the Sector Commander, Corps Commander Sanya Adeoye, FCIPurS, MCILT, is aimed at strengthening the existing collaboration between the FRSC and transport unions, sensitising motorists on the need to prioritise safety and ensuring compliance with road traffic rules and regulations.
Adeoye, while flagging off the operation, acknowledged the cordial relationship between the Corps and the leadership of NURTW and RTEAN in the state, saying the Command would leverage the partnership to encourage voluntary and total compliance with traffic regulations. He stressed that although public enlightenment remained a major focus, enforcement would not be compromised.
The Sector Commander said the joint operation would continue intermittently until the end of the year as part of measures to reduce road crashes and ensure a safer Ember Months period in Ekiti State. He urged motorists to comply with safety regulations, particularly those relating to seat belt use, speed limiting devices, overloading and other road traffic requirements.
The state chairmen of NURTW and RTEAN, Comrade Omotayo Falope (Oloforo) and Comrade Sunday Adeoye, respectively, welcomed the initiative and commended the FRSC Sector Commander for what they described as an inclusive and proactive approach to road safety management. They pledged the cooperation and support of their members towards the success of the joint exercise.
During the patrol, several motorists were arrested for offences including seat belt violations, non-compliance with speed limiting device requirements, overloading and other traffic infractions. The offenders were enlightened and booked accordingly, with the FRSC emphasising corrective education alongside enforcement. The Sector Commander urged motorists across the state to obey traffic rules at all times, stressing that “Emi Olaaro — Life Has No Duplicate.”
