The Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has intensified efforts to prepare its students for the labour market by equipping them with essential employability skills, including professional curriculum vitae (CV) writing, workplace ethics, character development and digital visibility.
The initiative formed part of the university’s Maiden Career Preparation Programme held at the Ikole-Ekiti Campus, where students received practical guidance on the expectations of employers and strategies for building successful careers after graduation.
Speaking at the programme, the Vice-Chancellor of FUOYE, Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bolanle Opoola, said the initiative was designed to ensure that students remain competitive and productive after leaving the university.
He explained that the programme reflects the university management’s commitment to the long-term success of its graduates by monitoring their progress and preparing them for the realities of the job market.
According to him, academic excellence alone is no longer sufficient, stressing that industry-relevant competencies and professional attitudes are equally important for career success.
“We want our students to progress in life after graduation. We are interested in their success stories and want to ensure they possess the skills and competencies required to excel in today’s competitive labour market,” he said.
Earlier, the Director of the Directorate of Career Services, Prof. Adebola Aderibigbe, said the programme was conceived by the Vice-Chancellor to strengthen students’ employability skills and improve their chances of securing employment shortly after graduation.
He noted that students were trained on how to prepare professionally acceptable curriculum vitae and present themselves effectively to prospective employers, irrespective of their academic grades.
The practical sessions featured seasoned professionals who exposed participants to contemporary workplace expectations.
Content and Digital Strategist, Miss Isioma Ojeme, educated the students on digital visibility, global career opportunities, artificial intelligence and personal branding. She urged them to leverage digital platforms strategically, maximise opportunities available to their generation and embrace continuous learning.
Also speaking, Talent Management expert, Miss Chioma Arah, delivered a session on interview mastery and public communication. She emphasised that employers place significant value on character, confidence and effective communication during recruitment processes.
In another presentation, Very Rev. Oluwaritimi Abraham encouraged students to acquire relevant professional skills, maintain high standards of presentation and professionalism, and cultivate positive attitudes capable of opening doors to career opportunities.
The programme ended with a commitment by the facilitators to mentor interested students, providing them with continuous guidance and support to enhance their career development and professional growth.
