On this historic occasion of his 100th birthday, it is fitting that the nation pauses to honour Chief Reuben Fasoranti, OFR, a towering figure in Nigeria’s political and social landscape and the revered leader of Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation.
Born on 11 May 1926, Pa Fasoranti’s life encapsulates the trajectory of modern Nigeria itself. He began his career in the classroom as a teacher and rose to become a school principal, shaping minds long before he entered public office. His tenure as Commissioner for Finance in the old Ondo State under the Unity Party of Nigeria administration of the Second Republic remains a reference point for prudent financial management and commitment to public service.
A graduate of the then University College Ibadan (now University of Ibadan), acquired a post graduate certificate in Education and a Master’s degree in Education Administration and School Management from the University of Hull, United Kingdom and Maguire University, Australia, respectively, Pa. Fasoranti’s love for education even at his early age is worthy of emulation.
As a political actor, Pa Fasoranti has been defined not by the pursuit of personal office but by an unwavering dedication to principle. In an era often marked by political opportunism, he has consistently upheld the ideals of federalism, justice, equity, and good governance that formed the bedrock of the Action Group and the progressive tradition in Western Nigeria. His leadership of Afenifere has been characterised by restraint, consultation, and a refusal to compromise core values for transient political advantage.
Baba’s exceptional and unflinching voice in standing firm against political tyranny to defend democratic principles—anchored in his integrity—will remain a reference point in Nigeria’s political journey. This stands in stark contrast to the opportunists who believed they had seized control of Ekiti politics through manipulation and undemocratic actions against me.
What distinguishes Pa Fasoranti is his moral authority. He is a leader whose influence derives not from volume or intimidation, but from the weight of a life lived in consonance with his convictions. Even in the face of personal bereavement and political trials, he has conducted himself with remarkable equanimity and dignity, earning the respect of friends and adversaries alike.
At 100, he stands as a living archive of Nigeria’s democratic struggles and aspirations. His counsel remains sought after because it is grounded in experience, tempered by wisdom, and delivered without rancour. In celebrating him, we celebrate a standard of leadership that prioritises the public good over personal gain and national cohesion over sectional narrowness.
As family, friends, associates, and well-wishers gather to mark this centenary, the wish of all who value integrity in public life is for Pa Fasoranti to enjoy continued health, peace, and strength. May his example inspire a new generation of Nigerians to embrace service, truth, and accountability as the true measures of leadership.
Happy 100th Birthday, Baba. Nigeria is better for your life of service.
