The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ekiti State Council, has called on both the Federal and State Governments to intensify efforts at addressing the growing insecurity across the country, describing the situation as a serious threat to peace, development, and national stability.
The call was part of resolutions reached at the union’s May Congress held on June 1, 2026, at the Tai Oguntayo Hall, Oke Bareke, Ado-Ekiti.
In a communiqué issued at the end of the congress and signed by the Secretary of the Council, Mr. O’Seun Ogunsakin, the union expressed concern over the increasing cases of banditry, terrorism, kidnapping, and other criminal activities in various parts of the country.
The congress urged residents to remain vigilant and security conscious by promptly reporting suspicious movements, unfamiliar persons, and unusual activities within their communities to relevant security agencies.
Journalists also warned against indiscriminate dumping of refuse and waste materials in waterways, especially with the onset of the rainy season. According to the communiqué, such unhealthy practices contribute significantly to flooding and pose serious dangers to lives and public infrastructure.
Ahead of the June 20 governorship election in Ekiti State, the NUJ appealed to eligible voters who are yet to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to do so without delay and participate actively in the electoral process.
The union encouraged citizens to exercise their civic responsibility by voting for candidates of their choice during the election.
Congress further reaffirmed the commitment of the NUJ Ekiti State Council to engage all governorship candidates ahead of the poll as part of efforts to promote issue-based campaigns and strengthen democratic participation.
The resolutions were reached after extensive deliberations on issues of national and state importance during the monthly congress of the union.
