The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ekiti state Council has expressed concerns over the rising cases of domestic violence in the state, called on parents to do background checks on families of intending couples. The council urged relevant government agencies and NGOs to embark on massive sensitization and campaigns against Gender-based Violence
The Council also urged residents of the state to clear their drains in preparation for the rainy season in order to avert flooding.
The union made the call during its February Congress of the union held at the union’s secretariat.
In a communique signed by the union’s secretariay, O’ Seun Ogunsakin resolve as follows:
1. The Congress passed a vote of confidence on the leadership of Com. Kayode Babatuyi said all steps taken during the arrest of one of its members, Dr Yemi Agbeleoba by the Department of State Service (DSS) were supported by Ekiti journalists.
2. The Congress hailed Governor Biodun Oyebanji for his continued support for journalists in the State and reminded him of his pledge to build a befitting press centre for the Union.
3. The Union also commended Governor Oyebanji for his cordial relationship with Ekiti caucus of the National Assembly which has ensured an improved federal presence in Ekiti.
4. The Union equally expressed delight at the medical breakthrough recorded by the newly established Federal Medical Centre, Ikole Ekiti, under the Chief Medical Director, Professor Dare Ogulusi, urging the Federal Government to provide state-of-the-art equipment for the hospital in order to enhance optimal medical services.
5.The Congress expressed deep concerns about the rising cases of domestic violence in the State. While it called on parents to do background checks on families of intending couples, it urged relevant government agencies and NGOs to embark on massive sensitization and campaigns against Gender-based Violence.
6. It called on Ekiti residents to clear their drains in preparation for the rainy season in order to prevent flooding.
