To cushion the effects of economic hardship caused by the removal of fuel subsidy which skyrocketed prices of consumables, Oke-Emo community in Ilawe Ekiti, Ekiti South West Local Government Area of Ekiti State has distributed food items worth millions of naira to the less privileged in the community.
Over One hundred and fifty residents included the aged, widows, widowers and the less privileged believed to have been badly affected by the economic quagmire were major beneficiaries that were carefully selected by Heads of the five Quarters that make up the community; Ilero, Oke-lemo Idofin, Ijimo and Oke-Gbede.
Addressing journalists during the distribution, the Elemo of Oke-Emo community, High Chief Gbenga Agbona said the distribution of food stuffs and cash was to support the less privileged to mitigate the present economic situation.
Chief Agbona opined that some kind hearted sons and daughters of the community, home and in the diaspora made cash donations for the kind gesture for all and sundries to have food on their tables .
According to him, the elders do not want a situation whereby anyone would go to bed hungry.
Items distributed include; Rice, Beans, Garri among other consumables, with a promise to do more including free medical check-up and treatment for all the aged.
Commending Ekiti state governor for reaching out to Ekiti residents, the Elemo urged communities in the state to complement government’s efforts, saying the society would be a better place, if other communities could take a cue from Oke Emo
including free medical check-up and treatment for all the aged.
In addition, an indigene of the community, Mrs. Modupe Akinwumi Adebowale through her foundation in honour of her mother, Felicia Obasola gave out fifty thousand Naira each to four persons to support their businesses in the community.
She also sent in some food items and clothes to be distributed through the discretion of the Elemo, High Chief Gbenga Agbona.
In a separate interview, the beneficiaries who could not hide their feelings were elated; sang and danced to show appreciation.
Highpoint of the programme was a special prayer for those who donated towards the project and peace of the community.
