The Ekiti State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has advised residents of the state to adhere strictly to precautions following predictions of thunderstorms in several states of the country, including parts of Ekiti, by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET).
This was contained in a statement signed by the Honorable Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Erelu Tosin Ajisafe Aluko, and made available to newsmen in Ado Ekiti.
The statement emphasized that thunderstorms are localized weather events caused by intense heating of near-ground air, leading it to rise and form cumulus clouds. These clouds accumulate electrical charges, ultimately resulting in lightning and thunder.
While the Ministry acknowledged the potential dangers associated with thunderstorms, the statement emphasized the importance of avoiding panic.
The Ministry urged residents to remain calm and take necessary precautions, to minimize any potential risks associated with the predicted thunderstorms.
Precautionary Measures according to the statement include;
Seeking shelter indoors: Stay indoors and wait for the storm to pass before venturing outside,
minimize electrical hazards: Turn off and unplug electrical appliances to avoid damage from power surges.
Maintain distance from windows and reflective surfaces: Stay away from windows and avoid using mirrors or other reflective objects.
Avoid open flames and gas: Do not light gas appliances or use open flames during a thunderstorm
Maintain a safe posture: Avoid lying flat on the ground. Stay away from conductors: Keep a safe distance from electric wires, poles, and other conductors.
Limit cell phone use: Avoid using your phone during a thunderstorm, as metal can attract lightning.
The statement further assured the residents that if the above suggestions are followed religiously, Ekiti stands a chance of recording little or no casualties as predicted by Nimet.
