The Ekiti State Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Sanya Adeoye has appealed to Government at all levies to provide pedestrian and cycling walk ways while designing road construction for safety of non-motorised road users.
The sector commander said putting in place walk ways for roads under construction would reduce road fatality, harped on regular exercise for healthy living as recommended by medical experts at least 30 minutes walk and cycling in a day.
Commander Adeoye disclosed this in a press conference to commence 8th UN Global Road Safety week slated for 12th to 18th May, 2025. Speaking on the theme ” STREETS FOR SAFE , MAKE WALKING SAFE, MAKE CYCLING SAFE”
The Road Safety Boss reiterated the importance of sensitizing road users to allow non- motorized roads users make use of the road without fear or intimidation by motorists. According to the sector commander, ” Adequate sensitization shall be given to the teaming road users on the need to give adequate consideration to non- motorised road users which include pedestrians that walk from one point to another and the cyclists their inalienable right of way and protection by the motorised users . Adding that safety is a collective” responsibility of all to reduce road crash to the barest minimum.
While encouraging walking and cycling as regular exercises, the commander highlighted its benefits to : good palpitations, neutralising stress, burning of calories to have lighter body, free joint movement and healthy breathing among others.
Given an assessment of road crashes and fatality between 2024 to 2025 in Ekiti State, the commander opined that the level of fatality is relatively low based on the efforts of road safety officials , by creating awareness on the proper use of the road. He attributed the low fatality to educational standard of Ekiti residents, saying they imbibed the culture of obeying road safety rules.
He highlighted other channels through wish the masses were enlightened to include: weekly radio programmes , regular motor pack rallies on weekly basis and early morning cry on daily basis to enlighten the motorists .
The commander added that the command did not limit its enlightenment programmes to motor packs in Ekiti state alone but ran advocacy visit to mosques and churches on regular basis.
Until Commander Adeoye’s transfer to Ekiti State, he was the Corps commander in charge of FRSC store , Abuja. He has served in several states, held several positions with 28 years experience
